Field visits of the Governor

As the head of the State and as a Constitutional authority, the Governor of Gujarat undertakes tours to various districts of the State on specific requests that are received in the Raj Bhavan from various social, cultural and charitable organisations to attend various functions and programmes that are arranged by them from time to time.

First, requests from various organisations in this regard are duly processed by the Raj Bhavan Secretariat and after ascertaining the significance and importance of such functions; and after due verification of the credentials of the organisations and organizers, the requests are acceded to. The cases wherein it is not befitting for Hon'ble the Governor to attend are regretted. Often, the district authorities also invite the Governor on their own to visit their respective districts to see the development activities undertaken by them. The Governor also visits the districts at times of natural calamities like Cyclone, flood, drought, scarcity etc. and takes stock of the welfare measures taken by the administration for providing succor to the people.

During such field visits, the Governor often holds discussion with the field officials regarding the development activities undertaken by them and often provide useful suggestions for better implementation of these activities. Hon'ble also meets the representatives of the general public who avail this opportunity to ventilate their grievances by submitting applications, petitions, memorandums etc. Local level issues are sorted out on the spot to the extent possible; otherwise the district officials are requested to look into such representations and to do the needful. Where the problems pertain to the State level administration, the same are processed by the Raj Bhavan Secretariat and thereafter duly forwarded to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary as well as to other senior officials for taking appropriate actions.

Impressions of the Governor are conveyed to the Government at an appropriate level for taking necessary action. The field visits of the Governor are helpful to the administration as the district officials get the benefit of His Excellency's observations and this helps a lot in making the administration much more result-oriented and responsive to the problems of the people at the grass-root level. The Governor also gets a first-hand feed-back and knowledge about the problems of the people. He also gets an exposure to the traditions and living habits and culture of the local people. These field visits are of a great help both to the local administration as well as to the local communities.
